Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Inscape designed for? Inscape Recovery began as a place for Ibogaine treatment integration and aftercare, but has since expanded its scope to general addiction and emotional problems. We are not a conventional rehab center, in that we do not focus on alcohol and drugs. Rather, we are interested in exploring addiction as an energetic phenomenon that affects most people on some level, drug-addicted or not, in terms of the way they think, feel and make decisions. Also, Inscape is more focused on optimizing overall health, sharing practices to improve well-being and creating a space for individual exploration than funneling people into specific modalities of recovery or prescribing medications.

Is there rehab for depression? Yes. Inscape accepts many participants who do not have any obvious addiction, but are dealing with trauma, burnout or other emotional issues, or who otherwise feel stuck in their life. About half of our participants come strictly for emotional/mental health treatment. For us, rehab for anxiety and depression is no different than treatment for addiction. The approach is fundamentally the same.

What is the benefit of an emotional wellness program in Mexico / addiction recovery center in Mexico? Inscape is located in a very tranquil and friendly part of Mexico with very little foreign tourism. For many of our residents, one of the great benefits of the program is experiencing a culture that is more community-oriented, more laid back and less individualistic than that of many modern societies. Also, of course, Inscape can offer a very comprehensive package of services at a more affordable price owing to its location.

How long should I spend in a recovery program? It depends on the person, but we recommend an average of six weeks. Our minimum required commitment is four weeks

Where can I go to detox? For participants with drug or alcohol addictions, Inscape is not a detox center. We do have doctors, but do not provide the kind of round-the-clock medical care that acute detox requires. With many substances, withdrawals can be dangerous, so we always recommend detoxing in some kind of medical setting. For opiate addiction especially, we suggest going to an Ibogaine recovery clinic. We can recommend some places for Ibogaine treatment in Mexico, but also suggest that each person does thorough research to find the best Ibogaine clinic for them.

Who should take ibogaine? Inscape does not provide ibogaine, except for Ibogaine “boosters” - small doses intended as reinforcements for people who come from high dose ibogaine treatment and can benefit from extra medicine. For those interested in taking high dose ibogaine before coming to Inscape, we can recommend certain places that we know well and trust. We work closely with several Ibogaine clinics in Mexico, and one Ibogaine clinic in Canada. Generally speaking, Ibogaine can be beneficial for a number of different conditions, though it is particularly well-suited to opiate users because it can reverse the effects of withdrawal and help restore the body’s natural production of endorphins.

What kind of medical care is offered at Inscape? Participants have appointments with the doctor once a week, though both of our doctors are available by phone in case of some medical issue. Medical appointments generally include acupuncture and/or other body work, plus the prescription of plant-derived supplements (included in the program cost) for things like neurotransmitter balancing, digestion and sleep. Our doctors are also here to address any specific medical issues. Outside medical costs for things like bloodwork, EKG or prescription medication are not covered by the program, but may be prescribed by the doctor in specific cases.

What is the typical daily schedule? Our program schedule, while allowing for some free time, tends to be busy. Weekdays typically start at 8:30am with yoga, while the weekend schedule starts at 9:30am with breakfast. Typically there are two blocks of activities after breakfast (group therapy, classes or a work block), followed by lunch, followed by a siesta and then a final activity at 5:30pm. Dinner is at 7:30pm, then free time at night for movies, games, campfire, hanging out or having alone time. Of course, the schedule varies a lot and certain activities that demand more energy and time (excursions, sweat lodge, plant ceremonies at night) sometimes necessitate significant modifications.

What are the work blocks? As part of Inscape’s schedule, we ask that participants engage in work at the center two times a week. The most common tasks involve working in the garden, though each resident may suggest an alternative if something else is more suited to their interests - helping in the laboratory, kitchen or maintenance department, among other options. Work blocks can also be learning opportunities; for example, residents who work in the garden will work with a wide variety of plant species and become familiar with the different areas of the permaculture system.

What kind of pyschotherapy is offered at the recovery center? We have two psychotherapists. One specializes in cognitive-behavioral therapy, the other in trauma and family systems.

How do I prepare for my life after treatment? Personal growth and self-improvement require sustained work - the process isn’t something we “complete” at some point. But this is actually good news. It means our lives can stay grounded in a deeper purpose, and that room always exists for continued progress. At Inscape, we help each participant prepare a specific plan of action for their lives after treatment. Usually this involves measures for maintaining good physical health, continued therapy, social support, recovery support, the implementation of at least one daily spiritual practice and, for people who need it, a timetable and plan around resuming school or work. Also, Inscape offers online group therapy for alumni two days a month, as well as week-long alumni retreats at the center several times a year.
